Violence at the Workplace

According to statistics, behind automobile accidents, attacks rank as the second most common cause of workplace fatalities. There were 454 fatalities brought on by workplace violence in only 2019 alone. Over 80% of active shooter instances between 2000 and 2013 occurred at workplaces, according to the FBI's initial research on the topic. The FBI found that 29% of shooting occurrences had happened at establishments that were accessible to the public in a follow-up 2019 report that covered a 10-year period of research.

The problem of domestic violence also has to be addressed. Women have frequently been murdered at work by the people who have abused them. Violence against women does not just happen in the home.

Women in Malawi and Swaziland show the most concern about violence and harassment at work, with up to 75% of female workers in certain nations sharing this issue. Significant concerns about violence and harassment in the workplace were noted in many nations, even in high-income economies where strict regulation of workplace safety and women's safety problems is the norm. Just 3% of Singaporean female employees were female, compared to 42% of Finnish female employees.

According to the World Risk Poll, workplace violence and harassment have a comparable prevalence among men and women, affecting close to 11% of female employees globally. However, the survey reveals a substantial gender difference in several nations, with 39% of Australian female employees reporting this problem compared to 24% of male workers. In terms of the number of women who experience violence and harassment at work, Australia comes in sixth in the world.

Worldwide, 14% of female employees have had major workplace injuries. When women work in riskier industries like agriculture and fisheries, this figure jumps to 23%. Due to the significant percentage of women employed in the major agricultural industries of these two areas, which experience higher workplace safety difficulties, 28% of female employees in East Africa and 27% of female employees in South Asia report serious workplace injuries.

Training on employee safety should include techniques for reducing violence in the workplace and identifying the warning signals of probable domestic and workplace violence.



To avoid violence in the workplace employers can:

  • Complete background checks on new employees
  • Create a policy that prevents harassment
  • Create an effective line of communication
  • Establish a strict anti-violence policy
  • Training and awareness are key factors in workplace violence prevention
  • Encourage your employees to accept individual differences
  • Prevent conflicts from turning into harassment or violence
  • Manage visitors and provide security monitoring
  • Encourage everyone to report any and all violent incidents
  • Deter robbers with limited assets on hand

  8. The National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS) found that robbery accounts for 85 percent of workplace violence deaths and is the most frequent cause of work-related homicide. Workers who trade currency, work alone, or work night shifts are more vulnerable. Implementing better employee engagement practices will impact positively reducing violence.

  9. Every year, millions of workers are impacted by the national issue of workplace violence. Any act of violence or threat of violence committed on the job is considered workplace violence. These occurrences may involve physical assault, intimidation, or harassment acts or threats. Workplace violence includes homicide, physical assault, and verbal abuse. According to a Bureau of Labor Statistics report, 18,960 workers in the private sector experienced nonfatal workplace violence in 2021. Tragically, 500 workers were murdered at work in the same year. Identification of threats is the first step in developing a successful preventative strategy.

  10. This is a global issue. But finding the true situation is somewhat hard. I suggest that recruiting an organizational psychologist is a good option. To advise accordingly & get to know the actual situation of a problem. Because there are some mental issues that causing violence which should be treated but even he doesn't know about it.

  11. Violence emerge from various roots and another has tried his best, genetic causes warrant psychiatric intervention. Rest may be resolved with talented well tempered and compassionate supervisors. Nip in the bud is better. Encourage to tolerate others differences is a good point.
